Workmen's Compensation Insurance Benefits

Here are the key benefits of obtaining workers' compensation insurance in the UAE:

  • Medical Expenses: Workmen's compensation insurance covers the costs of hospitalization, sanatorium stays, surgeries, X-rays, medical analyses, medications, rehabilitation equipment, and the provision of artificial limbs and other prosthetic devices when disability is established. Furthermore, the employer is responsible for covering any transportation costs related to the worker's treatment.
  • Work-Related Death: In this case, the worker's family members are entitled to compensation equal to the worker's basic wage for a period of twenty-four months, with the amount ranging from a minimum of 18,000 dirhams to a maximum of 35,000 dirhams. The compensation is calculated based on the last salary the worker received before his death.
  • Permanent Total Disability: This means that the worker is permanently unable to engage in any profession or work that allows him to earn a living, such as in cases involving complete loss of sight, loss of arms or legs, mental illness, or chronic and incurable diseases. The compensation payable to the worker in the event of total permanent disability is equal to that payable in the event of death.
  • Permanent Partial Disability: Permanent partial disability reduces a worker's ability to work by a certain percentage but doesn't stop them from working altogether. Compensation is calculated like this: For instance, if a worker's disability is 25% and their last monthly wage was 1,000 dirhams, they would receive 6,000 dirhams (25% of 1,000 dirhams for 24 months).
  • Rehabilitation Expenses: Workmen's compensation coverage includes expenses for rehabilitation services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other forms of rehabilitation to aid the employee's recovery.

What Does Workmen's Compensation Insurance Exclude?

The worker is not entitled to any compensation for a work-related injury if investigations by the competent authorities prove any of the following:

  • The worker intentionally injured himself to commit suicide.
  • The worker intentionally injured himself to obtain compensation, sick leave, or for any other reason.
  • The accident occurred under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • The accident resulted from a deliberate violation of preventive instructions posted visibly in the workplace.
  • The injury occurred due to intentional misconduct by the worker.
  • The worker refused, without valid reason, to disclose the injury or follow the treatment prescribed by the medical authority responsible for health affairs in the country.

Workmen's Compensation Insurance Add-Ons

To enhance the protection provided by workmen's compensation insurance, the following extensions can be added:

Employer's Liability:
  • Safeguards against lawsuits raised by the employee's family for death or injury due to proven negligence.
  • Covers compensation exceeding AED 35,000 as per UAE Federal Labor Law No. 8 of 1980.
Expenses for Repatriation:
  • Covers the costs of transporting the deceased employee's body due to a work accident.
  • Coverage up to AED 5,000 per person, with higher limits available for an increased premium.
24-Hour Personal Accident Cover:
  • Covers employees against injury, disability, and death from accidents outside regular working hours and workplaces.
